One of the best anthologies of Sudanese literature in translation I have read in recent years. The carefully selected array of texts offers a rare glimpse into contemporary fiction writings by mixed of established and new Sudanese talents. The translation is lucid and poetic, and kept with the spirit of the original texts. The introductory text by the Sudanese literary giant Taban Lo Liyong, and the afterword by the editor Bhakti Shringarpure, provided the much-needed context for appreciating such innovative works. The beauty in diversity of the texts must have eluded the ruling elites on both sides of the divide who wrote the script for the partition of Sudan. If only politicians would listen to the transcendental poetics of creative writers, they would have seen the light! An enjoyable and highly recommended volume for literary scholars, critics and readers from all walks of life.

BHAKTI SHRINGARPURE is a writer and translator who is co-founder and editor-in-chief of Warscapes magazine. She is Assistant Professor of English at University of Connecticut. Books include Kaveena by Boubacar Boris Diop (translator) from Indiana University Press and the third volume of the Imagine Africa anthology (editor) by Archipelago Press.

TABAN LO LIYONG is a poet and writer whose experimental works and provocative opinions have stimulated literary controversy as well. He was born in 1938 in Gulu, Acholi in Uganda, and has lived in Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Papua New Guinea and South Africa. His works include Fixions, Franz Fanon’s Uneven Ribs, Another Nigger Dead, Ballads of Underdevelopment, Carrying Knowledge Up a Palm Tree, Meditations in Limbo, The Uniformed Man, Another Last Word, Last Word, and Thirteen Offensives Against Our Enemies.
