In 1986, during the second year of our daring publishing program launch, we had a stroke of good luck. A couple of years of conversations with Prof Carole Boyce Davies then at SUNY Binghamton resulted in the publication of an edited volume, Ngambika: Studies of Women in African Literature, co-edited with Prof. Anne Adams (Graves) of Cornell University.
This book highlighted the centrality of women writers and literary criticism. It had 18+ contributors, mostly women, but also several male writers. It was immediately lauded as a breakthrough and has remained in print to date.
In 1990, Ngambika was followed by another massive undertaking from Prof. Carole Boyce Davies, and her friend and colleague, Prof. Elaine Savory (Fido): Out of the Kumbla: Caribbean Women and Literature. Again the focus was on Caribbean Women writers and Literary Criticism. The book also continues to endure.
Now, Prof. Carole Boyce Davies and Prof. Elaine Savory have also bestowed upon us, their latest, Beyond the Kumbla: Sylvia Wynter and New Conversations, anchored on the long awaited review and standing perspectives of Sylvia Wynter's afterword that was included in Out of the Kumbla.
We have now come full circle, and we are quite proud to continue the tradition. By now, Women writing and working on literary criticism is quite widespread and has helped raise the standards of the genres. We celebrate our beginnings...
