Product Description

This book is a fascinating historical study of the complex nature of Afro-Christianity in the Caribbean and the American South. This study is an in-depth assessment of the Caribbean Church, Black Theology, Revivalism, and Rastifarianism. Continuing in the tradition of Vincent Harding, Gayraud Wilmore, and James Cone, Erskine holds that Black Religion embodies visions of liberation that are secular as well as spiritual. On the basis of his own experience and research, Professor Erskine chronicles he struggle of black people for freedom against bondage, for justice against oppression, for identity against anonymity, and for full humanity of all persons and communities.

Noel Leo Erskine is associate professor of Theology and Ethics at the Candler School of Theology Emory university, in Atlanta, Georgia. He served as a Baptist pastor and professor of Caribbean History in his native Jamaica. He holds graduate degrees from the University of London, Duke University, and Union Theological Seminary, where he also received a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology under the direction of Professor James Cone. Dr. Erskine's most recent publication is King Among the Theologians
