RETHINKING REVOLUTION: New Strategies for Democracy & Social Justice, The Experiences of Eritrea, South Africa, Palestine & Nicaragua, by Dan Connell (HARDCOVER)
Product Description
Dan Connell's RETHINKING REVOLUTION is a bold and provocative analysis of the possibilities for achieving democracy and justice in this next century. He skillfully analyzes the experiences of Eritrea, South Africa, Palestine, and Nicaragua in a daring attempt to show the way for radical social change everywhere. This is the right moment for such an analysis, and Connell's historical understanding and breadth of vision make him an invaluable guide.
Howard Zinn, author, A Peoples History of the United States
Dan Connell brings to the study of Africa a rare mix, combining a journalist's passion for addressing contemporary dilemmas with a scholar's care about placing every dilemma in a context, both geographical and historical.
Mahmood Mamdani, author, Citizen and Subject: Contemporary Africa and the Legacy of Late Colonialism
Rethinking Revolution is as useful as it is illuminating. This is a thoughtful, often brilliant, look at the challenges posed by the post-cold-war era, and a necessary guidebook for those who will continue the good fight.
Margaret Randall, author, Gathering Rage: The Failure of Twentieth Century Revolutions to Develop a Feminist Agenda
Rethinking Revolution brings to life the spirited and often contentious debates among frontline activists over how to unify and transform their societies toward greater economic, social and political equality. Connell looks at the most dynamic new social movements in these countries women and workers and examines how they are challenging and enriching the strategic vision of leading political parties, even as they redefine the nature of power and the struggle to achieve it. He concludes: Democracy without justice is ritual without substance, but justice without democracy is charity, not change.
