On 17 April 1980, after a bloody war that ended 90 years of colonial rule, Robert Mugabe inaugurated the newly independent Zimbabwe. The author, an Anglican priest, spent six months in 1988 interviewing people in Zimbabwean to gain a picture of the early years of independence.
