been a joy to follow and I am privileged to have witnessed it every step of the way from his
undergraduate days and the publication of his first book, Night of Darkness and Other Stories.

generations which preceded it.

Once in a while, there is a memoir so comprehensive that all aspects of a life well‑lived
are easily discernible. We are candidly taken through a journey in academic leadership,
complexities of relationships, life’s trials and tribulations, tenacity and resilience,
strategy and tactics, research and policymaking – across continents. The memoir
confirms that early life, context and upbringing shape us who we become.

Paul Tiyambe Zeleza provides a truly global intellectual autobiography about growing up
in colonial and postcolonial Southern Africa, traveling across continents and disciplines,
languages and identities, positions and passions. A magisterial memoir designed as
much as an exploration of what makes an intellectual as it is an autobiography, showing
how intellectual life cannot be separated from political projects and historical ruptures.

of Texas, Austin.
This is the eminently readable and insightful memoir of one of Africa’s most prolific and
well-travelled intellectuals. It is a crowning achievement that traces over four decades of
energetic intellectual engagement, both on the continent of Africa and across the
American Diaspora, offering profound insights into decolonization, globalization and the
challenges of higher education.

California, Davis.
Paul Tiyambe Zeleza carries the reader on a trans-Atlantic journey over some of the
most dynamic decades of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Zeleza, a distinguished
scholar of the African Diaspora, chronicles his own life story to illuminate important
insights about intellectual work, colonial and post colonial realities, race, and global
politics. A compelling memoir about an amazing life and career.
Barbara Ransby, John D. MacArthur University Chair, and Distinguished Professor,
University of Illinois Chicago.
A fascinating account of a Malawi historian’s youthful formation in southern Africa and in
adulthood his appointments at Caribbean, Canadian, American, and Kenyan
universities as teacher and administrator. Deploying lyrically described land‑ and
city‑scapes, the narrative examines complex parent/child relationships, disillusionment
with African post‑independent regimes, and the broadening of his identity as a
transnational diaspora subject.
Maureen Warner-Lewis, Emeritus Professor, University of the West Indies, Mona,
Jamaica
In this riveting memoir, Zeleza astutely weaves together a lucid narrative of the
personal, the local, and the global, integrating the complexities of early beginnings with
the complications of reinventions in colonial and postcolonial contexts. It is brilliant in
bringing his experiences to life as his literary eloquence illuminates every expose, captivates the imagination, and evokes compelling engagement with fundamental
questions of identity and location.
