ABOUT THE AUTHOR
RICHARD PANKHURST, a prolific writer on Ethiopian history and culture, taught for many years at Addis Ababa where he founded the university's Institute of Ethiopian Studies. He was awarded the International Prize for Ethiopian Studies in 1974. He served for almost a decade as librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society in London, but is currently back at teh Institute of Ethiopian Studies in Addis Ababa.
