This multilingual reader brings together literary and cultural critics from Africa, Europe, and the Americas to validate and re-evaluate the legitimacy of Afro-Brazilian studies and culture as a field of academic inquiry worthy of canonical inclusion. The thirty two multifaceted essays adopt an interdisciplinary approach in order to uncover the intellectual nature of Afro-Brazilian cultural production. Issues addressed include race relations, Afro-Atlantic Diaspora, gender, sexuality, identity formation, cultural diversity, performance, and popular culture.

Este livro multilíngüe reúne críticos literários e culturais da África, da Europa e das Américas para validar, reavaliar, e conferir a devida legitimidade dos estudos afro-brasileiros como um campo que merece inclusão canônica. Os trinta e dois estudos adotam uma ótica interdisciplinar para desvendar a natureza intelectual da produção cultural afro-brasileira. Os assuntos abordados incluem as relações raciais, de gênero, a sexualidade, a diáspora afro-atlântica, a formação identitária, a diversidade cultural, a performance, e a cultura popular.

ABOUT THE EDITORS
NIYI AFOLABI teaches African and African diaspora literatures and cultures in the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, USA. He is the author of The Golden Cage: Regeneration in Lusophone African Literature and Culture, and editor of Marvels of the African World: African Cultural Patrimony, New World Connections, and Identities.
MÁRCIO BARBOSA is co-editor of the Cadernos Negros (Black Notebooks) series and author of Paixões Crioulas (Black Passions), Frente Negra Brasileira (Black Brazilian Front), and Gostando Mais de Nós Mesmos (Loving Ourselves More). He has contributed to Os Cem Melhores Contos Brasileiros do Século (Best 100 Short Stories of the Century), Thoth, and Callaloo.
ESMERALDA RIBEIRO is co-editor of the Cadernos Negros (Black Notebooks) series and author of Malungos e Milongas (Brothers and Arguments). A professional journalist and a seasoned Afro-Brazilian writer and critic, Esmeralda Ribeiro has contributed to many anthologies including Finally Us, Ancestral House, Fourteen Female Voices From Brazil, Callaloo, and Women Righting.
