Could we ever do more than the prodigal ones? Were not slavery and colonization, in the end, better, were not these centuries of pain perhaps better for us, we who will never know how to take care of ourselves? Strange how the torturer of those centuries, through the miracle of aiding and granting, has been transformed into impotent rescuer, powerless in the face of our ostensible inability to accept progress, powerless in the face of our supposedly internal wars, faced with our refusal of democracy, good governance, and the rest of the global market. Because, of course, the former settlers and slave masters become, from one day to the next, messiahs.
