MODERN ALGERIA: A History from 1830 to the Present, by Charles-Robert Ageron
Product Description
This books covers the history of Algeria from the beginning of the French conquest in 1830 to the present day. It provides a balanced political, social and economic account of the colonial period down to 1962, with a concluding summary of political, social and economic developments since independence.
The body of the work is based on an exhaustive knowledge of the French archival and literary sources for the history of colonial Algeria, and supplemented by his close acquaintance and continuous scholarly involvement in Algerian events, research and publication since the outbreak of the Algerian war in 1954. The book is thus an authoritative treatment of the modern history of Algeria from a liberal point of view by the foremost French scholar in the field, and one which remains the only complete history of the country in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The English edition has an introduction and full critical bibliography for an English-speaking readership. It is intended that it should be essential reading for unversity students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as for others with amateur or professional interests.
