HOMEWARD JOURNEY: Readings in African Studies, Edited by Herbert T. Neve
Product Description
Designed to promote an understanding of Africa, its unique worldview, and Africa's place in the world, Homeward Journey is a cross-disciplinary anthology that introduces its readers to fundamental historical and contemporary topics about this vast continent. Using a topical approach within an historical-chronological framework, this volume contains thirty-eight readings that are divided into four parts. These parts are: Introduction to Africa, Traditional Way of Life in Africa, the European Presence in Africa, and Nationalism, Independence and Nation-Building.
This unique anthology, a first-of-its kind basic educational tool, presents in one volume information about Africa that until now had only appeared in widely dispersed sources. The work aims to engage students in a broad spectrum of subjects, looking at Africa from an African viewpoint. Drawing from the disciplines of art, history, literature, religion, music, philosophy, anthropology, geography, and political science, this anthology covers, subjects that include selected ancient and medieval African kingdoms, traditional African institutions, slavery and colonialism, the emergence of indigenous nationalist and independence movements, and the current effort to achieve black majority rule in South Africa.
The historical and contemporary materials in this volume cover topics that should be addressed in a comprehensive survey course on Africa. Moreover, these readings accentuate the importance of exploring African and the African worldview in and of themselves.
"This is more than a collection of reading. It is anthology which captures some of the major concerns and debates of African history and culture. And yet the book is also a valuable tool for teaching and learning, and a good guide to a traveler on a "homeward journey." -Ali A. Mazrui, Director, Institute of Global Cultural Studies Binghamton University, NY
